As the door closes on 2018 and opens into a, hopefully, prosperous 2019, it is finally time to dethrone the Pantone color of the year and name a new queen. That's right, ultra violet is ready to pass the torch to the future ruler: living coral. For all of us who need some perking up from a difficult 2018, she's here to imbue our lives with some bright freshness and fun. You'll definitely be seeing her pop up on everything from bags and shoes to home accessories. Even big name runway gods, like Marc Jacobs, are adding it to their shows for spring/summer 2019.
Living coral is sort of an ode to cheerfulness. The vibe is vitality and friendliness; think the flush on a youthful cheek when it's cold outside. To put it bluntly: it's a happy color--you can't help but smile when you see it. I mean who can feel down when this pretty shade of pink is around? Pantone's color of the year is sort of annual aid to set the intention for the year. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone color institute, views color as a lens that equalizes our shared experiences. This year they wanted to focus that lens on human connection in its best light. 2018 might have been a rough one in terms of feeling kinship with our fellow human beings, but 2019 is going to be filled with genuine good feelings and positive social connection. It's time to put our differences aside and focus on what we have mutually in common--a big mood if I've ever seen one.
We love this color because it is universally flattering; any skin-tone pretty much looks good in this joyful orange-y pink. Since it's undertone is more orange it will add a nice amount of warmth to the skin. Bright shades like this also have a way of making the wearer appear more well-rested and healthy. Warning: your skin may appear more glowing when you wear it. Bold colors like this may seem hard to incorporate into your everyday wardrobe if you are a little color shy. If that is the case for you, go ahead and find accessories in the shade to pair with your more neutral pieces. Living coral is the perfect pop of color to enliven any outfit. You'll find it pairs easily with neutrals, as well as brighter colors like turquoise or lemon yellow. You also aren't limited to just clothing and accessories; paint a wall to create some levity in your home, or find some home accessories to add little touches of color to your living space. A throw blanket placed casually on a couch or on your bed is the perfect place to start if you want to try the color out without redecorating your whole space.
A new year and a new color doesn't have to mean a new you, but it sure can add a nice pop of inspo to your day, and who knows where else it might lead!
